    Question re: custom theme development?

    Is there a "best practice" out there for managing custom development with regard to future upgrades? If I do any theme modifications, and there's a new version available for upgrading, (bug fixes, or otherwise), what does everyone typically do in order to prevent their custom designs/mods from being wiped? Thanks!
