theme-functions.php changes with chld theme ?

I have done a small mod in the theme-functions.php to get rid of the category count.
As I use child theme for all other mods I tryed upload the theme-functions.php to a folder with the name includes in my child folder. This will not work, neither to just put the file right in the child folder.

I had to upload the file into the original folder and the child theme idea is kind of broken.

How is the right way to do this?
