Has anyone tried to integrate one of the many membership plugins out there? s2Member.com has a free version. Given the endless variations of business models and niche needs, it seems unreasonable for CP to account for all of them beyond the "all you can eat" membership option (gets my vote as a new feature).
With these member tools, you can control access to not just pages or posts, but very specific content on a page/post can be hidden using simple shortcodes surrounding the premium content.
Example: the URL custom field would only reveal itself for subscribers on the Submit and Edit pages. Everyone else only sees "Url: for subscribers only"
