Adding text to the main body of the home page

OK, I'm probably being very stupid here, but I can't work out how to add a block of text into the main body of the home page. At the moment I have the ad categories and the random/recent ads thing. I'd like to get rid of that and just add some normal text but can't work out how to do it as my home page is set as a directory. I'm sure it's simple but I've spent so long tinkering with css codes and php that my brain has stopped working.
