Block Countries
Hello Classipresseurs!
Do any of you guys block certain countries from accessing your site? Most of the big classified websites here in Ireland do it, because of the Nigerian and other scammers from poor and desperate countries.
If you do it, do you use a Wordpress plugin, or do you do it yourself in the .htaccess files?
Now I am not a programmer, more of a copy and paster, and forum information scrounger, so for this reason I am not 100% confident to go ahead and try this for myself.
My hosting company is local, and I asked them, and they said that it is risky, because IP addresses can change, and arent always accurate, so you run the risk of blocking genuine users from your local country (in my case Ireland).
So for this reason I am afraid to implement it.
In order to block the scammers sending emails to my users, I have all the emails sent to admin, and then I forward on the genuine ones and delete the scam ones. I determine whether or not they are scam by looking at the IP address of the sender, and also the language and content of the message.
The problem is though, that scammers are also now PHONING my users. I got a phone call from a Russian gent looking to buy my dads Tractor, said he had a collection agent in Ireland.
SO, I need to start blocking these countries like the big classified sites do here in Ireland.
