Categories drop down

Hello,

I have two questions

1) I would like to remove the number of items listed under the sub category - is it possible? Where do I go to remove the code that echo's that number.

2) I would like my search drop down to list the main categories (without the sub categories) whilst the directory style categories to list all main categories with the sub categories - is it possible? Where do I go/How do I do it?

A typical example is the gumtree.com website - it has excatly what I want to do.
