Child Theme Help

I need to update my Classipress theme (I'm having pagination problems) I've hesitated because I've done a few minor mods such as:

- Sold Tag Mod (List View)
- Sold Banner Mod (Actual Listing View)
- Display Item has been Sold on the contact tab when sold
- Footer changes

I would like to use a Child theme so I don't have to make customizations every time I update. I've never done it before and the instructions are really confusing. Can someone help give me a sample of what code I would enter for the mods above?
