Classipress Header Colour and Main Page Ad Child Categories Spacing

Hello,
Would appreciate if someone could help me out:

1. I need to make the Classipress header pitch black, but cannot find a way;
2. I also need to compress the child categories on Classipress main page (directory style) closer together (as in craigslist) as they take too much space. I have seen a post by trick on the subject but haven't managed to achieve an outcome.
