Classipress v3.1 - Major release?
This is just a theoretical situation, but it raises a question. What if Appthemes were to implement an upgrade model which charged for major releases? Would you pay for CP v3.1 if it were a major release?
If any of you are like me, I have been waiting for v3.1 for, well, forever now. It seems like a number of forum members are very upset with the release schedule, which inadvertently says that there is a lot of demand for this product.
As a CP user, would you pay an upgrade charge of, let's say $39 USD, to get this thing moving? Again, this is just an example. I just picked a number that sounded fair, and was close to half of the initial purchase price. So, $39 * (let's approximate with a low number) about 3,000 eager CP forum users = $117,000. That should be enough money and enough incentive to push this project through. A paid upgrade could help to hire some more programmers and testers to help finish CP v3.1 with as few bugs as possible. I mean the initial CP v3.0.5 release was a nightmare. Hopefully that type of release won't happen again.
The flipside to this is Appthemes would have to commit to a strict release date. No more missing release dates by 3, 6, or 9 months. Charge for an upgrade, hire some additional resources, deliver a quality product on-time.
I'd hate to see Appthemes continue to fall behind with this. Does everyone remember the Xmarks debacle? They ran out of money and didn't have a plan in place to make any in the future. So, the community came to it rescue because they loved the Xmarks product. That's how CP is. We love it, but we hate the release schedule and communication issues.
Sound off if you'd consider a paid upgrade to CP v3.1 with a strict release deadline and a guaranteed bug-free, gold release...
