Custom page template for index - pagination?

I've created a custom wordpress page template as I don't want the homepage of my site to be my main classifieds listings.

When I click on any of the pages in the pagination at the bottom it goes to:

http://single.vintagebike.co.uk/classifieds/page/2/

and displays a page not found message.

(http://single.vintagebike.co.uk/page/2/ shows the listings)

I wondering how I can get the pagination to work with a custom page template - anyone any ideas?

I'd prefer the links to be under classifieds/page/2/ etc rather than link back to the root of the domain (single.vintagebike.co.uk/page/2/ etc)
