Date Error

I added the date in the top of my header: www.tumojo.com but I tried a few codes and ll return error:

- settings has been revised and no problem with them
-

<?php echo date('j M, Y |'); ?> This code gives me a day ahead even when my settings are set for my city

<?php the_date('D, j M, Y |'); ?> This code shows me the date on my language but just shows the day I installed my site...

I tried datetime, the_time, echo, etc and all gives me errors... my WP is on spanish
