Newbie confused on making Categories
I have run several Classifieds sites over the past six years. This is the first time I have used ClassiPress 3.0.2 with WordPress although I have designed and installed at least 12 sites using
WP and extensively modded and created new templates for them. So, I am not a neophyte with either Classifieds programs using PHP and mySQL or with WordPress.
I admit to being stunned that the install page referred to completely left out some important discussion about CREATING AD CATEGORIES. I assumed after watching the only two videos available before I committed to buying this program that the custom Dashboard for ClassiPress 3.0.2 would include CATEGORIES.
I know how Categories are made in
WP for Blogs and I have used
WP as a CMS with just pages as well not relying on Categories at all.
But it seems logical that the ClassiPress mod would have made creating Categories a more integrated function. After all, for a Classified Ad site CATEGORIES are indispensable and one of the first things that should be set up.
But when I look into the Blog and the Forum I find a strange absence of this step as if the assumption is that Creating Ad Categories may have been discussed several years ago and is considered core knowledge automatically now.
And I have not found a discussion on the thinking (for a ClassiPress first-timer) behind how ClassiPress piggybacks onto the standard
WP Add Category function so that we have Parents and Children or Categories and Sub-Categories.
The "Getting Started with ClassiPress" Tutorial has apparently yet to be written or I cannot find it.
As a
WP guy I know the usual way to create Categories by going into Posts and then Add Category but this is completely outside the ClassiPress Dashboard where it should have been included by all logic.
But why do I have to pour over months and months of isolated Forum posts trying to piece together the "best practices" for ClassiPress when it comes to creating AD Categories and Sub-Categories??
And modifying WordPress for the abundance of categories needed for a typical Classified Ads site is a slow tedious process. Why have the developers not made this one topic a top priority for a Tutorial all by itself?
Having griped about all that---what IS the answer? Other Classified programs have much more elegant ways to create Categories and Sub-Categories. What are the ClassiPress steps and best practices from experience and design?
If you please. Thank you.
