text and drop down search not working?

Hi,

i have 2 categories in the drop down search box. The default calssipress search has one text box and that 2 categories in a drop down menu.
I noticed that when a user is searching the following happens:

1 -if the user leaves blank the text box and selects one category from the drop-down, it returns no results.
2 -If the user just clicks 'search ads' with nothing written either on the text box or in the drop down . no results - shouldn't it display all ads in this situation?
3 -if the user writes something in the text box but chooses no category, the ads are displayed but no refine search is available.

am I doing something wrong? how to solve this?
most of the times users just want to see ads from a specific category without having to write some word in the text box...
