Thumbnail image resize issue

I noticed that the thumbnail not re-size properly if the actual image is rectangular. Thumbnail will only re-size properly if the actual image is square.

Example : 1) Thumbnail look ok if actual image size is 2000 x 2000
2) Thumbnail look bad if actual image size is 2000 x 970
3) Thumbnail look bad if actual image size is 970 x 2000

Attached file shown image A and B.
Actual image A , size is 2000 x 970.
Actual image B , size is 2000 x 2000, I purposely make it square (extend from image A).

How to solve this issue? I want all my users's thumbnail re-size properly (like image B) even with a rectangular image size 2000 x 970.

I want the thumbnail display a complete image, smaller image "B" is doesn't matter.
Anyone can help?
