Width of Design Question

First, I dont have any problems with the default design this is just a question concerning the reasons behind a more narrow looking design vs a wide design? Meaning if I have say 5 categories. It only lists 3 categories side by side the 4th and 5th go below them.

Now had the homepage width been wider there is the possibility that a person could have 4 or 5 categories side by side before the rest go below

So question is.. did you choose to have it narrow for viewing purposes ( resolution size of monitors ) or was it just a preference of design choice?

For instance Kijiji is WIDE design where as classipress is narrow in appearance.

Just wanted to know as I have been playing around with the css and have viewed it with a wider appearance and I could change it to that but im wondering how that would effect viewing it in lower screen resolutions like the old 800 x600 or 1024 x 768
