Added category.php but the column sorting reverts to index

Have added a category.php to have a different page output from the main index page however when I click on the sorting function it outputs to index.php. Is there anyway I can get around this?

    Thanks!

    Oh, failed to mention this.

I simply duplicated the index.php and renamed it category.php so the problem might be that I need to change some values - Am decent in css but the whole wordpress codex and php bit in general baffles me.

    Thanks.

Sorted the problem out with <?php echo get_category_link($cat); ?> .
