Duplicating Index

Wondering if this is possible:

Duplicating index page as a template and then assigning this template to a page gives you a page just like the index but without the listings, what is passes is the name of the page itself instead of the categories.

Basically am trying to recreate the index page but only display one cat in a grid format instead of list

by grid format do you mean something like a gallery view? like this site here: http://www.swgdirectory.com/

Here is the link, this is what the listings look like if you duplicate the index file as a template. See how the only listing is the page name itself?

as opposed to :

http://exxxcitelist.com/class/ which is the actual listing.
