Speed Up Classipress - What can we do?

I'm glad that David is planning to clean up the files to make our classipress powered sites load faster.

Whilst waiting for David to release his modified superfast classipress theme, Can we all make suggestions on how to adress the issue (loads slowly):

Please bear in mind that as a new site, majority of us will be in a shared hosting account. Here are some that had already been recommended:

1. Install and activate the Wp-Super cache plug-in
2.Only use plug-ins that is absolutely needed
3. Upload logo in the root of the site
4. Only display 5-10 posts on the homepage. The more posts the better, however, this may increase the loading time.
5. Use images to a bare minimum.


Have you got anything else to suggest?

Would love to put the posting an ad to a page, instead of a pop-up but don't know how to do it. This may help speed up the loading time, as each time you visit the page that post classified pop up info (whatever you call it) is being loaded.

Primarily any speed issues are at the hosting end... so

1. Don't use really cheap shared hosting... you get what you pay for.
2. Make sure your host uses an upto date server spec - you can check with phpinfo() in a simple file. Search google on how to do this. If it's apache it should be 2.2, php should be 5.2.8 - or at least 5.2.6, mysql at least 4.1.x. Apache should also use mod_gzip. Grill your host on the http & mysql configurations. They should have caching & optimisation.
3. Use an opcode cacher such as Xcache or eaccelerator.
4. If you have a few sites consider a reseller account at a decent host, a vps or even a dedicated server if you do other things as well.

5. Then think about optimising your scripts...

I agree on the hosting.
But there are great hosts out there. I host 4 adult video sites of which on one I host my own video's.

I have unlimited storage and bandwidth. If my sites were slow I'd make no money. Yet I'm on a shared server.

I pay $14.95 a month. They are running a special. Check my sig.

I know a few ways. I still have to implement the tweaks but I'm currently using 2.8, I really don't have the time to update&remodify 2.9 so im just gonna wait for 3.0.

Ok here's the list:

1) Use CSS-Sprites:

2) Use YSlow (FireBug add-on):

3) Place your javascript files right before your </body> tag:
This way the users won't have to wait for the javascript files to finish downloading before they can use the site.

4) Place all your css code in 1 file, all javascript in 1 file
This way there will be less http requests. Less http requests = faster loading pages.

5) reduce the number of queries.
Go clean up the php files and replace things like <?php bloginfo('url'); ?>/cars with e.g. http://nosplaza.com/cars

That's great. I bought the script at the spur of the moment. But I'm hoping that David willbe true to his words that he'll clean up all the files and make this as his top priority.

I'm sure everyone will agree with me that when you're starting out and or site is still not attracting a lot of visitors that it is practical to only used a shared hosting service.

Having said that, I'm actually using hostgator and I have another site powered by it and it loads really quickly. Except my classipress powered website.

Heroes, Yes I plan on looking into optimizing CP but it's not a "top priority" since it doesn't seem to be a major issue for anyone else. There might be a slight speed increase if I can find some areas to optimize but I doubt it will be visually noticeable.

ClassiPress is a very database-intensive script!

Please look at optimizing the codebase. Too many database hits! Using a child theme of CP's theme in v3.0.2 equates to more than 200 queries for the homepage! A regular listing hits the DB approximately 150 times.

As a measuring stick, 100 queries is deemed quite a lot.

Had to resort to using a caching script - W3 Total Cache.

Think about storing commonly-used settings in a global variable. Also look at saving serializing settings instead of giving each option its own entry in the DB.

This might be a dumb question, but when using a caching plugin, will users still see new ads that are added? Ok, really dumb question!
But how exactly does a caching plugin work?
