I don't know about how to get ReCaptcha working, but "SI Captcha" works straight out of the box for registrations and comments.

It didn't work for me on the login page, but I don't really want to make my visitors fill in a captcha just to log in anyways so that doesn't really matter.

You won't be able to see the captcha form for the comments unless you are logged in as someone other than the administrator. (Took me a while to figure that out because I neglected to read the instructions LOL)
