Sidebar Location Info

Back in July 2009 I inquired about the possibility of setting up CP so that ads could be browsed by location. I see from previous posts that countries and states will be implemented as custom fields in v3. I am sure there must be advantages to this approach. That said, I was also hoping to provide country specific information within the sidebar for each country. In other words, once a visitor navigates to a country via a link or drop-down selection box they are presented with unique information related to that location within the sidebar of the results page. The most simple way to accomplish this that I can think of would be to utilize individual category templates, but for this to work the countries would of need to be categories instead of custom fields. Since custom fields are being used instead of categories, is anyone aware of way to publish different info to the sidebar that is dependant on the location searched? Perhaps a plugin or widget that will work with CP 3.0's use of custom location fields?

Assigning locations to categories and utilizing category templates would seem to be the straightforward approach. *Not to mention, in addition to serving location related content in the sidebar, this would allow for location based breadcrumbs and location specific rss feeds; two other features I would really like to provide site users.

What if I were to change CP3's custom field assignment from locations (i.e., countries and states) to offering type and product category (e.g., for sale or for rent and thingamajigs or whirligigs)? That way the locations (i.e., countries and states) could still be included as standard WP/CP categories.

On the other hand, if I want to take advantage of CP3's built-in location capability without modification, it seems like I would need a custom plugin for all three desired features.
