Custom Post Type & Taxonomy URLs

Hi I would like to create a custom URL for ads with the ad category in the URL for example:

%ad-category% doesnt work, nore does %category%

please can someone tell me what I need to do in order to get the ad category displayed in the URL for the ads. I know there is an option in classipress > settings > advanced but this still wont achieve the result I require.
