different expiration times for instantaneous postings

I am putting a free classifieds website...
AND
I would like to set up categories with different expiration time-lines.

I was looking at the forums and I figured out that one way to do that is to select "Charge for ad posting " and create different price groups.
> Issue # 1 with this method is that then they have to select the category to post in to and pricing group. Ideally, I would be able to force all categories A to expire in 30 days and all from Category be to expire in 365 days
> Issue # 2 is that I would like to have instantaneous postings, and by selecting "Charge for ad postings the system defaults to giving a “pending approval” status

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Am I missing an easy workaround? Plug-ins?
