    What's the purpose of entering tags in in WordPress admin?

    What's the purpose of entering tags in WordPress admin? I thought it was so that they could be used for auto-complete when employer posts project. From what I can see the tags seem to serve no purpose since they can't be "picked" (user still needs to type in whole tags anyway)/
