Blog template question?

Hi there Appthemes and community. I have installed a community forum plugin (bbpress) to use on my Jobroller site but also want to add some widgets to that forum page (as there are a bunch of widgets included in the plugin).
I created a page called "forum" added it to the menu and it works, however, I choosed the blog template to be able to add individual widgets to that page specifically, but when adding widgets to that "widget area" nothing shows in the sidebar on that page!
Also I´ve done some testing (I´m a beginner in WP) and when selecting "blog template" in page attributes on some other pages they don´t load at all..you just end up in the start/landing page!
Please, try to explain whats the purpose of these different templates/widgets areas, I want to use them to customize specific pages on my website.
