Custom Child Theme

Has anyone tried making a simple child theme for jobroller following these instructions?

I am not having any luck at all. I even followed the codex (https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes) instructions (basically the same as the above), but still no luck.

This is after trying several attempts and settings using the popular "Child Theme Configurator" plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/child-theme-configurator/).

I basically just want to make some minor mods that will keep whenever the theme is updated. Stuff like the copyright text and a custom header image, plus what ever changes I do in the future.

Basically, no matter what I try, some of the styling loads, like colors, menus, widgets, but the layout, fonts, padding, etc, are all messed up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
