Events not unpublishing after their actual date has passed.

Hi there, I am not sure what I have done wrong but events that have passed by in terms of date and time are not being unpublished - so therefore they show up in searches etc and of course are not relevant so off course I would like them to unpublish when they are over so the user can reset them for the next date or just leave them be? Is this an option. Right now all events just sit there and this is not ideal. This is really a massive issue if you have thousands of events of course. Thanks for your time on this.
