Have a slide show on the home page

Hi, is it possible to change the featured image on the home page to a slide show?

I can add a slide show widget below the featured image, but I'm trying to get the slideshow to replace the featured image.

I also tried to create a new home page without the featured image section but then it added a side menu and didn't give me the same widget options. I feel if there isn't an easy way to do it then this way will probably work but I'm not sure how to customise it.
