No, you don't need a .htaccess file. You only need the Network Privacy plugin and a robots.txt file that blocks everything (or use the Block Search Engines option from WP).

One thing we could do is add a "Generate new key" button on http://appthemes.com/api-key/ which you could use to invalidate the old key, in case it's compromised.

Yeah, so the problem was that blue.css was loaded after the child theme's style.css.
Since we don't plan on supporting changing the color scheme through the admin, I merged blue.css into style.css...
