I would try taking the adsense code from the header and place it here, theme-searchbar.php and pasting it at line 43, right after, </div> <!-- /search-bar --> and before <?php endif; ?>.

The categories don't work, because the categories in Classipress are custom taxonomies and the plugin doesn't support pulling in custom taxonomies at this time.
you dont have to mod the plugin, you can use the following code to pull in custom fields:
