There is something wrong, you should have only one 'categories' (you can always check the demos in cases like this), you can try disabling your mods/plugins maybe there is a conflict.

Yes you can use the map on the home page and the pins show you the name of the listing, to change the icons you will need to mod/hack the theme though.
