billing for signups

when someone signs up to be listed in the directory, are they billed once,
or can it be set to a monthly recurring billing

i'd like to have billing monthly, if possible

Currently our themes do not offer recurring billing options, customers are emailed when their subscription period expires but they need to manually renew. If you wanted to implement automatic recurring billing, this would require customization on your part. Thanks.
