    Child Theme

Is it possible to place the style.css in a child theme directory to prevent breaking the theme when there are upgrades?

The best way is to create a backup of style.css and then when an update comes out, compare the two files. Most (if any) of the style changes are made to the /styles/ folder anyhow (where all the 5 color schemes live) so those are the files you should be more concerned about.
