    I don't necessarily unerstand the wordpress links and refernces.

    Basically, we want a website to use, hosting where we chooses.
    Can these be used in non-wordpress environments? like normal websites?

    You may have mixed up the wordpress.com http://wordpress.com/ , free blogs hosted service with wordpress cms platform software-script http://wordpress.org/.

    When using "wordpress cms platform software" you need to have your own domain and webhost of which you have full control of.
