Link button in ad / entry?

Hey! I've tried searching but couldn't find out. Here's the deal. I want my site to be open for individuals to advertise ecological, fair-trade stuff, free of charge. Simple set-up, everything seems covered, theme looks great. These are simple classifieds, like "Home-made cookies, vegan, this is the price, contact me to buy some". But - I also want to manually add entries as well.

These entries of mine should get rid of or replace the right-side widget (Maps, contact, author) and instead have a simple "READ MORE" button or link, to take the user to other sites. Perhaps replacing the price tag with a read-more link? So, the questions comes down to...

    1) Can I somehow easily change the sidebar widget for posts of ONE specific user only, without affecting other users? Only one "admin type" user should have this ability, to create entries with links instead of contact form.

    2) I don't like the map in the right default sidebar widget and would prefer it there's, for regular users/individuals globally across the site, is only displayed "Contact" for all entries. Is this something I can change in the settings without hacking code meself?

    3) Can I limit amount of images users can upload with their entries to one (to save storage)?

    4) Can I use "Facebook comments" (their new, global commenting system) for commenting instead of the built-in one? Obviously it would require a plug-in, but many themes with proprietary comments doesn't support that.

Would love to buy this theme and get started TODAY so I hope to see a response soon =)

    1) What you describe would involve customization on your part. Whether or not you can achieve what you want to do really depends on your level of coding knowledge. In terms of the theme though, it's not encrypted, so you are free to make such changes if you wish.

    2) If you don't wish to use the Google Maps option in the sidebar, then you simply leave the Google Maps API field blank in the ClassiPress admin and the tab won't be there. No coding required.

    3) Yes, you can set the max. images per ad in the ClassiPress admin.

    4) Again, this would take some custom coding, and I can't confirm if any plugins will definitely work for this particular function as I have not seen mention of it. Not to say there aren't any, just that I haven't heard of it.

Feel free to check out the ClassiPress admin demo for a better idea of what you can actually configure from the dashboard.

    Hello,

Thanks for your reply. Some follow-up questions then! :)

    1) Generally speaking, without hiring a coder for extensive rewrites, there's no way to put custom fields or change the "contact us/about the author" part, then? And neither, I can't simply "hide" the contact/author part for individual ad's?

    2) The possibility to modify the contact-box seems like something that could be useful for a lot of people (looking at various other WP themes, it's typically one of the most requested features, for instance on OpnPress and YellowPages, two other classifieds scripts). Could it be implemented in an immediate release or something?

    3) Usually when I buy themes, and they are updated, once the update is uploaded, all customized content (replaced logos etc) all revert to defaults which tend do destroy my newer files. Does your updates work the same way?

If I can't change this somehow, it wouldn't work as I need it, which is why I ask so many questions. It seems like a great theme and you seem like great guys and gals, so I hate to be a nag! Thanks!

    Rephrasing...

    Hey,

    I have been trying to figure out a solution myself (which is somewhat hard since your support threads locks prospect's out) and as far as I can see, other people have asked and presumably solved similar problems (but I can't see that, like you could). I think I can solve pretty much all of my problems thusly;

With no Google Maps set-up, there's two tabs in each ad: contact and author. For all ad's added by user, I want to display "Contact" first. For ad's added by admin (or tagged somehow etc, doesn't matter to me) I want to display "Author" first. If so I could presumably add an link or button in the "Author" info using custom fields, yes?

Otherwise I could enable HTML and put a button/link in the ad's in question. But the problem is the ambiguity of the author/contact tabs. Could you, dear moderator, check if there's a solution to this that works both ways, eg. not simply changing the order for ALL but allowing an exception for some/something?

Again, sorry for the questions, but I've bought enough many WP themes in the past that all are great in their own respects, but that ended up being useless because they didn't meet my needs or I couldn't customize them properly. And I'd like to give my business to you - if possible.

    1) As I said, it depends on your level of coding knowledge as to what you can do for yourself. But what I'm saying is that what you're asking is not controlled by standard settings in the ClassiPress admin. There are various mods shared in the forums by other members of the community so sometimes you can find existing thread to assist with changes, otherwise you can also seek community based support if you wish to ask further questions. Customizations are not officially supported.

    2) You have to appreciate that we have thousands of customers and it's not possible to simply add features/functions as soon as someone comes along and wants to see something added. This is why we have the AppThemes Ideas Exchange, so our community can post feature requests, and others can vote. This way our development team have a better idea of what the overall community wants.

    3) Basically, if you customize the default theme, and a new version of the theme is released, then yes you should expect to lose changes you have made to the theme files, although you won't lose actual settings and logos. The way to minimize this is to create a child theme, and note that our themes come with patch releases which allows you to change only those files that have been updated since the last version.

In terms of your last post, if you're planning to make changes that don't effect all users and is selective on who is logged in, this will take some customization as usually such changes do effect everyone. So, to say it's possible, yes, but whether or not you yourself can make the customization is really up to you.

Thanks, Pep's! All good info :-)

I am most likely purchasing this theme tomorrow, I think I have an interim solution that could work "good-enough" for the time being. However, I was wondering, since I don't have access (as a prospect, not a current purchaser) to the threads you are referring too, could you possibly grant my user (this one) access? If only for a day or so. I have found great threads, but I can only read the first post - the question, typically - and not the answers! Would greatly appreciate it!

...and thank you for taking the time to help me!

    Best regards

I'm afraid that full access to the forums are accessable to verified AppThemes customers only, no exceptions. I wasn't referring to any specific threads anyway, just mentioning that the forums do contain modifications shared by members of the community, but I was not implying you can find a thread for every point you have raised.

We're happy to answer any pre-sales questions you have, so you are welcome in this regard.

OK, thanks. A final question then!

If there's for a category no custom fields specified, what happens? Eg. if I don't want to have "City" or "Manufacturer" or nothing else. Does this area in the ad's just get empty and the description beings below the thumbnails as it does with custom fields in action, or does the description extend up the right side of the thumbnails?

I am asking since if it does in fact extend and doesn't leave an ugly "dead" space, with HTML on, I could presumably put a link button to the right of the thumbnails.

Can you post the page link you are referring to so we can have a look.

Please help our moderating team work more efficiently by not sending us support questions via PM. You can read more about how AppThemes support works here. However, you can send a PM to follow up and remind me if I missed your support request/thread.

Thank you and have a nice day.

I don't know what that means, but the page I am referring to is the ad/entry. The ad/entry has the images on the left and displays the customizable fields to the right, eg on your demo site, under "Auto", there is a red Ferrari (F430). To the left in the ad/entry, there's two thumbnails and to the right, the custom fields have been filled with "Beverly hills", "California" etc. I would assume I can delete these custom fields, but does the description still being beneath the thumbnails? It looks like it, even though it seems counter-intuitive. But yes, that's my question. :-)
