The blog post you have referenced is the original design for the theme from 2010, so given that not all of the features mentioned there were included with the first release, the homepage layout has also changed accordingly. The homepage layout options will ultimately be determined by the functions that are implemented in future releases, so are more become available, as too will the options. Thanks.
