A WordPress child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality of another theme, called the parent theme, and allows you to modify, or add to, the functionality of that parent theme (more info
here). We recommend that if you're looking to modify the default theme from the original, that you create a child theme in order to retain your modifications in the process of an upgrade. You can read more about customizing themes
