Author page sometimes returns oops page not found

I'm using CP 3.0.4, and I've run into a problem with the author links.

If there is a space in the username i'll get a 404 "Oops, page not found" error.
Example: http://boas-oportunidades.com/author/nuno%20garrido
(I tried adding a / at the end with no change)

If the username is just one word, everything works fine.
Example:raap | Boas Oportunidades

Is this a known problem? Can anyone help me figure this out?
I read the forums, but the other problems with the author page seem unrelated.
