Categories Not Showing

The case of the missing categories:

The categories & subcats on the default category page were there - and now they're not.

Now - when you mouse over the category page on the top nav - it comes up blank.
They absolutely were there before.

However - for some reason - the categories are listed in the drop down underneath the nav bar where there is a search box and a category list.

Yes - there are lots of categories - the names of dress designers.

Yes - I have changed the display from standard, to directory, back to stand several times.

I have disabled and re-enabled plugins - it did not help.

I did notice that the default "Categories" page which appears in the top nav bar is not listed under PAGES in the Pages Editor.

Am I missing something somewhere?

Is there a limit to how many categories/subcategories will display?

Also - why is the "Categories" page not listed under "pages" - is this in the documentation?
