Child theme on an already changed website

Hi all. I have already made some little changes to my theme, and didnt think until recently that I aught to create a child theme before I go any further with planned changes. I have followed the tutorial on this site but I think it's aimed at a clean install of CP. Is there a way of somehow making my current theme (given that i've made a few changes already), the child theme and then installing a new CP as the parent theme? Not sure if it's do-able, or even a sensible idea :-/ My site is live but I dont mind taking it offline for a little while to jog things about.
