Child Theme live on my domain after doing tutorial?

I just went through the tutorial on creating a child theme, so the next time a major upgrade comes out I don't have to re-modify everything that I've changed over time on my instance of classipress.

So, I essentially started over with my site, went through the tutorial, completed it successfully.. added the login on home page deal, etc. solid tutorial.

But the child theme is live on my domain, with the black background and all... is this correct?

When I want to make changes to other files to affect other things on the site (say, remove the 'blog' link on the text bar or remove the search box on the home page) is it just a matter of copying the original files I need to make those changes to my child theme folder and changing them?

Then, next time there is a major classipress version release my child theme files will be pulled to keep my modifications despite a major upgrade?

I figure that's the point of the child theme.. just not totally sure how it works. While I dabble with some mods on my other blogs with other themes, This is WAAAAY deeper than I ever expected to go in the back end coding of a blog or website... this community, and the potential for periodic guidance is the ONLY reason I even bought classipress.. I figure... if I keep it simple, with some help... I might just be able to build something cool.
