Confused - Category Icon Guide and plugin wont work - please help

Hi Guys

I have tried the category icon tutorial and such simple code just doesnt work for me.

The icon just refuses to ever display .....

So I thought I would try the plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/category-icons

my only problem now is where would I find the code to add the icons to the front page category listings , and how would I amend it ?

I believe the code I want is @ http://www.category-icons.com/2009/0...category-page/

but I dont know what to edit and where, and what too ?

If someone could spare a minute or 2 to post the answer, I would be grateful. Haven't had much luck with help on here, keep getting pointed to other topics, whereby the answer just isnt usually what I am looking for, but that aside I do appreciate any help I can.
