does "Preview image" affect page load time?

There is an option in ClassiPress settings (Settings > Listings > Ad Images Option) called "show Preview image". It can be set to "Yes" or "No".

When it is set to "yes," does that mean the user will have to download more data to view the search results pages, compared to when it is set to "no"? In other words, are the preview images always being downloaded regardless of this option, and this option just determines whether they get displayed or not? Or can this option actually prevent the preview images from being downloaded? I am trying to understand this option's impact on page load times.
