Modifying ClassiPress to support a business listing structure (help needed)

I'm about to jump into a project that calls for a pretty heavy ClassiPress customization, and I'm not sure where to start as far as some core functionality goes. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The idea is this:
Users, at the time of registration, should have the ability to register with not only a business name but also a specific category tied to their account (they would have to create a new account if they wanted to post ads in a different category).

Any ideas or points in the right direction?
