Admin panel completely broken after upgrading from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6

I just got done with a 3-hour adventure in failed upgrades.

For some reason, which I'd like to know, after upgrading Vantage from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6, my admin panel wouldn't let me navigate anywhere but the Vantage settings page (/admin.php?page=app-settings&firstrun=1).

After doing some digging, I found several posts with the same issue that were many years old - many of which I couldn't even read yet again, which can be quite frustrating Google can your keywords are in the post that discusses the exact same issue you're having but yet you're locked out of it and any possible resolution.

But here are a couple I could read:

vantage redirects to firstrun page, cannot access other admin pages
Responsive: Could it be the reason why I get this error?

Would someone please explain to me why this happened? If everyone had this issue with the upgrade, I doubt that the revision would be released, but yet I don't see how it could related to my specific site since it was a simple theme upgrade and only went from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6, without any big jumps.

Further complicating matters, I upgraded WordPress (from 4.5.1 to 4.5.2) and then Vantage Home Control and RateMyReview quit working! So all in all, I completely reversed both the Vantage upgrade and the WordPress upgrade, and I feel quite lucky that I was technically inclined enough to analyze and track down all these issues (and wise enough to reliable backups before changing anything).

I sure am glad that's over! ...but I have to upgrade eventually
