Problem with search Near - some locations with listings generate no results

i have noticed that I am getting no results for some towns and cities within which I have listings - I get no results for major places like Birmingham and Cambridge even though I have listings with addresses in and around those cities. If im not getting results for those it makes me wonder how many other locations are not working properly....

The method I am using to search is simply typing the town or city name in the Near search box (leaving the For box empty). While some locations work fine - London, Oxford etc -others don't.
