Ideas/Suggestions for Collecting Membership Payments

I have spent a ton of time trying to wrap my brain around this. Installed half a dozen plug-ins only to discover I'll need the paid version to do what I want to do and really the client doesn't have the budget for such things....

Really Simple Membership Sale:
A Non-Profit Society sells Memberships to the society for personal or business that they pay annually. Like this: http://www.shuswapfood.ca/join.php

Any ideas or suggestions on a neat/tidy/lightweight way to do this? I already have most of the information I need once a user registers can I use Cimy User Extra fields to collect the extra data on registration and modify that template to show them?

Any suggestions are welcome as at this point my creativity on the subject has waned significantly....thanks!
