PDFs as Image Uploads

I need the ability for users to upload a PDF file for their featured image on events. Most of our event submitters will have event fliers in PDF format. Our current site has the ability for a PDF to show as an image thumbnail next to the event listing. Is there any way for me to make this work in Vantage:

1. User creates an event
2. User chooses a PDF as one of their images to upload
3. PDF is converted into a image and used as feature image on the event.

EDIT: I am a fairly advanced user and can handle making php edits in my child theme if you'll point me in the right direction.
