auction plugin - have a look at this
Would it work with classipress?

their theme looks a ripoff of classipress and the plugin is not free either

It might work with Classipress but I think you need to do some modification either to the plugin or classipress to make it work with the assigned custom fields.

I bought it but it doesnt work with Classipress you get an error for redeclaration.. what a bummer........

But does it actually have the design to allow our Contributers to create and post auctions?

I read on their forum, and it seemed that there was some discussion that it could not do this, rather it was for admin to post auctions.

Let's pool resources and hire coder if it does indeed work for CP.
