    Question Regional restriction & Post ads with time interval

    Hi boys and girls

    The biggest problem when we grow larger is fighting spam.

    I am using:
    1) aksimet (of course)
    2) wp-ban (ban users by IP - full IP, or IP Range)
    3) Antispam for all fields (great for checking are there spam words in the sites that are published by the user)
    4) User Spam Remover -> to automatically delete all unused user accounts

    there are only two more I need:
    1) a plugin that restricts to post ads from IP-s outside the UK (so, Regional Restriction)
    2) a plugin that will make user wait, for example, 10 minutes to make 2nd post.

    here you go - solution for banning Africa - most scamers come from Africa

    Put the following data into "Banned IP range" of wp-ban (leave only IP range numbers and remove all the names as they are only for information purposes)

    China? haven't seen scamers from that side of the world.

    the reason why I haven't blocked Russia -> Russians tend to make ecommerce websites that are orientated on rich English speaking countries (USA and UK). These online businesses or affiliate websites (affiliate websites mostly apply to India) with huge traffic can be considered as legitimate even if they are running from different countries, therefore i can't see why we should block them.

    My experience - 90% of online scam problems originate from Africa (Cameroon, Mauritius, Nigeria a.o.), 9% are local scam artists and 1% applies to other world.

    I wouldn't block a whole country, especially remember that Russia and China are 2 only large countries (... not sure about India) that haven't got debts, therefore they will become more and more involved in our local economic market... and that is what we serve with our classifieds.

    @dubya have you got different experience?

    While I agree that we are now in a global economy, and arbitrarily blocking countries and or continents may not be a good idea for sites with an international appeal, some sites serve a local niche and might be better off without the extra white noise. On one of my sites, built for a local (Canadian) community of motorcycle enthusiasts, almost all unwanted users, ads and comment spam came from China and Russia even though it clearly has nothing to do with their products or services. Well... that is until I blocked them.

    IQ crashed my site so i am not using it anymore. I got tired of all this people spam so went after the the company they spam FOR and wrote to them and i even called them with Skype and told them off. Now they spam stopped for a while at least. I doubt people want to sit around and wait 10 min to post so should advice against that.


    I love to help out you out but please read this first Have you tried to install in a root domain? Have you tried to Resave permalinks? Have you tried to disable all plug in? Have you tried the default theme of Wordpress?
