3.0.5.2 child theme and single-ad_listing.php question

I use single.php to load different single.php files depending on what category the ad is in using 3.0.4 version. I did this using a child theme so I could make major differences to the way ads are displayed different categories.

How can I do this in 3.0.5.2 using single-ad_listing.php to load different versions again depending on what category the ad is in.

I know I need to somehow specify what category the ad is in but I'm not sure how to with custom post types?
